A Message From God

This past week, on Thursday, we received a message from God! No, I am not kidding…..we really received a message from God! I am so blown away by God’s lovingkindness towards us and am so excited to share this story with you!

On Thursday morning, I logged into Greg’s “MyMDAnderson” account. This is where we can check his appointment schedule, communicate with the nurses and view results of tests, scans, etc. The results aren’t usually posted until several days after we have met with the doctor. Even though we go over all of the results with the doctors, I always like to read the reports for myself. Maybe that’s just the nurse in me! Anyway, we knew that Greg’s last scans had shown improvement and that the doctor had called them “spectacular”, but I still wanted to read them for myself, so I logged in to see if they had been posted, and they had. Although, there is still cancer present in Greg’s body, I was so excited and thankful as I read through the results and read words like “significant improvement”, “favored to represent benign etiology”, “no suspicious lesions” (in certain areas of his body), “decrease in intensity of uptake” (from PET scan), and “most likely representing therapeutic response”. As I read the reports, I just praised God for His goodness and faithfulness to us, and thanked Him for hearing us and answering our prayers!

Later that afternoon, I saw my sweet friend Denise. Denise is so faithful to always pray for Greg and for our family. She was so excited and said that she had a story to tell me. This is the story that she shared with me:

Every Sunday morning as Denise and her family drive to church, they pass by another church. And almost every Sunday for several years, when they pass by this church, there is an older gentleman out front picking up trash. He arrives before anyone else and makes sure that the grounds are nice and clean as the church members start arriving for service. He is dressed in shirt and tie, and with a glove on one hand and a trashcan in the other, with a servant’s heart, this man picks up trash out of the yard. Denise has often used this man’s example as a life lesson for her children as they discuss his faithfulness and service to others. On the rare occasion that they pass by and the gentleman is not there, they pray for him.

Last Sunday, as usual, Denise was driving to church. This time, she was alone as her husband and children had driven separately. As she got close to the church, she saw the older man outside picking up trash, just like any other Sunday morning. But unlike other Sunday mornings, this Sunday Denise felt the Holy Spirit impressing on her heart to stop and talk to this man……so she did. She said to him, “I know that we don’t know one another, but I feel like I’ve known you for a long time.” She shared with him how she and her family drive by him every Sunday, and how they often talk about his faithfulness and his servant’s heart. She wanted him to know that someone noticed what he was doing and that it had impacted their lives….and she told him Thank You. She told him how they prayed for him on the Sundays that they passed by and didn’t see him. She said that he was pretty speechless to begin with, but then said, “Are you a believer?” Denise replied that she is, and the man responded, “I thought so!” They then began to talk and Denise found out that the gentleman’s name is Mr. Tom and that he is 88 years old. Mr. Tom is a World War II veteran and he also taught music for 65 years. Then out of the blue, Mr. Tom said, “In 1972, I was diagnosed with melanoma and it was basically a death sentence, but look at me now! God is sovereign!” Immediately, Denise knew that this was a message from God to Greg and I!

Denise and Mr. Tom talked for another minute or two and then Denise got back in her car and drove to her church. Guess what topic was discussed in her Sunday school class that morning???? “Have you ever heard the voice of God?” How cool is that?? Denise knew that she had just heard the voice of God that very morning!

But, as God would have it, Denise did not share that story with me until Thursday afternoon…..after I had read Greg’s scan reports and had spent time praising God and thanking Him for His faithfulness and His goodness, and for hearing and answering our prayers!! And then later that day, His message is delivered to me…..”I am sovereign!!” God is SO in the details! He used His Holy Spirit to prompt one of His children, Denise, to stop and encourage another one of His children, Mr. Tom. He used His faithful servant, Mr. Tom to deliver a message to yet two more of His children, Greg and I, through a faithful prayer warrior, Denise! Isn’t God just amazing!

Mr. Tom

Mr. Tom

We know that God is sovereign and that nothing touches our lives that doesn’t first go through His hands. We hear that God is sovereign at church and Bible study. We read that God is sovereign in His word. But for God to orchestrate the events to personally give us that word…..WOW!! How humbling that He would do that for us! Who are we that He should be mindful of us? Who are we that He should lavish such love on us?

I am so thankful that Denise was obedient and stopped to talk to a man that she didn’t even know. I am thankful for Mr. Tom being the vessel that the Lord chose to use to speak a message to our family. I am thankful for a God who loves me like that!!!

When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? Psalm 8:3-4

See what great love the Father has lavished on us… 1 John 3:1

My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. John 10:27

Sovereign Lord, you have begun to show to your servant your greatness and your strong hand. For what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do the deeds and mighty works you do? Deut. 3:24

Trusting His SOVEREIGN Plan,
Greg, Sandra, Katie, Emilie and Jacob

I WAS SO HAPPY TO READ THIS! WHEN THE 88-YEAR-OLD MAN WAS DIAGNOSED, WAS HE ABOUT THE SAME AGE AS GREG WAS WHEN HE WAS DIAGNOSED.

    WONDERFUL NEWS – AT LAST

Wow Bren! I had not even thought about this. Mr. Tom would have been 47 when he was diagnosed….the exact age that Greg was when he was diagnosed!! Just one more proof that God is in the details!!
