“What Are You Reading?” Wednesday

It’s that time again! Time to share what you’re reading. I’ve gotten so many great new titles to add to my ever-growing list of books to read! I hope you’re finding some to add to your list as well.

Currently I am reading The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom. I don’t often read fiction, but I’m so glad I picked this book up….it is great! I started it while we were on the cruise, but just couldn’t get very far. I was too easily distracted by the people, the beaches and of course, the beautiful ocean! I am about half-way through it now and am enjoying it so much. I highly recommend it! Even someone on the ship commented that it is one of the best books she has ever read!

This book has really had me thinking a lot lately. It still amazes and saddens me that slavery ever existed and was an acceptable thing by so many. How can one human being treat another human being in that manner?? It still amazes and saddens me that the Holocaust ever existed and was an acceptable thing by so many. How can one human being treat another human being in that manner?? It still amazes and saddens me that slavery continues to exist today. How can one human being treat another human being in that manner?? It still amazes and saddens me that abortion continues to exist today. How can one human being treat another human being in that manner??

What are you reading?? Please share!

Trusting His Plan,
Sandra

I just have to leave an opposing comment about The Kitchen House… while I agree about the slavery issue and the fact that it was a dark time in our nation’s history… I read this book a couple of years ago while staying in Germany for a week with my husband. I took four best-sellers and all fiction to just “enjoy” reading while he was at a Nato Conference. I h-a-t-e-d this book because the author crammed every crazy problem a family could possible have into one story… slavery was just a side issue. You had abuse of every kind and so many disfunctions that I was exhausted when I finished it. I was also offended as a southerner that it seemed like slavery wasn’t enough to make the south look bad, that she had to add every stereotype of mentally deranged plantation owners into the mix. So… while it was a totally different book than I normally pick up, I really felt like I wasted my time. I am not singling out this book… the other three were just as bad and I can’t even remember what they were. So much for best-sellers!

Alway open to an opposing view, Lynn! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I’m only about half-way through it right now, so I may change my mind before the end. 😉 But so far, I’m really enjoying it. Thankful there are so many books out there for all our different tastes!

I just finished Still Alice – the book about a woman diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s Disease which was recently made into a movie. My uncle was diagnosed at age 55 and passed away at 65, so the book really hit home. It also gave me an overwhelming sense that we are more than our brain’s capability to think and reason – there is a deeper essence that makes us who we are and that can’t be taken away by any disease. Really meaningful in light of Christina’s genetic syndrome and a sis-in-law who has mental illness. Great read, but I also found my tomatoes in the medicine cabinet while I was reading it, so clearly it made me feel a bit wacky in the head b/c the author did such a great job of portraying the disease 🙂

That is hilarious, Angie! I’ve been known to do things like that too…usually when I’m pregnant. OH…..you’re not….no, of course you’re not. 🙂 Thanks for sharing; sounds like a book I would enjoy, especially after working for many years with Alzheimer patients.
